Mars Climate Orbiter burned up in an attempt to go into orbit using aero braking, due to miscalculation of its trajectory. It apparently was vaporized along with any microbes that were on board. Why should the Japanese worry about contamination if Nozomi is going to do the same? If anything survived MCO's entry then Mars is already contaminated.
