The United Nations had inspectors on the ground in Iraq, finally, again, while the Administration was building its case for invasion.
I remember the utter contempt that was expressed here and in the many many conservative publications for their inability to find what was "obviously hidden". I remember many other voices asking that the UN be given more time and that the US not rush to war. I remember the contempt expressed for that sentiment as well. As far as Mr. Bush's supporters were concerned, the UN inspectors couldn't pinpoint their own behinds in broad daylight.
You were certain. You were wrong.
Also, I maintain that the major issue touted by the Bush Administration in their case for war was that Iraq was likely to use these weapons against the United States. You can hide behind the legal verbiage of the Congressional resolution if you wish, but that was not the speech delivered before the world. The State of the Union was. This was his case that he took to the people.
He was either wrong, in which case he took us to war based carelessly on wishes and cooked data, or he was lying, for motives upon which we can fruitlessly speculate for hours. You pick. I don't care.
