Mark,
The American people would never have supported flaunting the UN, going to war and having hundreds of American soldiers die just to "liberate" the Iraqis. It was the exaggerated case for Saddam's mythical WMDs and the threat that these non-existent weapons could be used against American citizens that mustered public support for the war and American sacrifice. That was precisely the reason why we said we couldn't wait for the UN to complete its inspections.
What really gets me is that not a single Iraqi was expected to lift a finger to help us help them "liberate" their country. It was all on us. I'd have felt a little better about it if there had been some kind of active and organized Iraqi resistance working to topple Saddam, but this was clearly not the case. We did it for them and I regard that as a terrific miscalculation that we will be paying for for a very long time.
Regards,
Donald
