Attitude in search of a story

Excuse me for saying so, but your reaction here reminds me of the title of an old Eddie Harris jazz favorite "Theme in Search of a Movie."

In short, and please forgive me for saying so, but I think you're just looking for an excuse to gripe about the media.

The soldier's comment should be quickly and easily understood by any GI who's ever been overseas, and everybody else, as well:

Sure, you're glad to be home, but you can't be completely overjoyed, because your comrades in arms are still on duty in harm's way.

In no way does this GI's comment make the war look futile. Rather, it makes the young man in question appear to be thoughtful, an emotion which, if anything, helps to counter the "kickass" sentiments expressed by other GI's on other occasions.

Maybe it bothers you that some of our GI's - I suspect many, if not most - are living, breathing creatures with real emotions who care about their fellow GI's.

I will begin to worry about our soldiers only when they look forward to combat.

In closing, and for your holiday listening pleasure, may I suggest "Brothers in Arms" on the album of the same name by Dire Straits.

Peace,
S
