re: I *still* don't envy the engineers

Meanwhile: you're juggling all this in the arena of the project budget; loosing valuable design time by having to attend interminable - and, as the article implied, rancorous - meetings; fighting all the other trades for space on the floor and in the utility passages, horizontal and vertical... and must have it all approved by the City of New York and the insurance underwriter (probably Factory Mutual, whose criteria are stricter than NFPA's) before it goes out to bid...

And that's before the trade craftsmen get to fight over who gets into what area first. And the long luch-time debates over what moron came up with this or that idiotic idea.
A project of this magnitude is going to be a hoot to work on.

I can see it now, the pipe-fitters want to be the same place the HVAC guys are, right by-god now. While the electrical hands are arguing with the structural crew about the placement of that vertical brace set, their prints show a J-box right there. (Been there, done it)

The General Foreman is pulling his hair out and eating Malox like M&M's trying to make sense out of a print and can't find out anything because the Architect and Enineers are in a meeting, and cannot be disturbed. And he just got a call that the lift pumps for 48 have been shipped to Atalnta by mistake, and the Multi-Cables for the Elevator control system for floors 1 through 50 is three feet too short....... Oh yeah, a hoot. (BTW examples are from past experience on major projects)

With all due respect to the numurous Engineers on the board, if a lot of the designs I've had to try to make work in the field had had some real world experience behind them, life would have been much easier.
We old Brown and Root hands (before Kellog and Haliburton) had a favorite expression we'd write on the printsets we turned back in with red pencil marks all over them.

AS BUILT!

OK fire away Gridley, I like the design myself, and it will turn out Ok in the end. One thing about Americans, we do get things built one way or another
