Years ago, I had a telephone conversation with Lynn Margulis (I was gathering material for an Op Ed piece that I was writing). She's a professor at some east coast university (forget which one). She uses her graduate students as a buffer against the outside world. I had a lengthy conversation with one of them to establish that I wasn't a raving lunatic. The graduate student informed me that Gaia fruitcakes would sometimes throw things at her and often sujected her to crazed insults (it's tough being a celebrity). Later Prof. Margulis told me that she believed the only world in the Solar System with life on it was the Earth. I suggested to Margulis that she be first author of my Op Ed article (it concerned Mars colonization versus exobiology). Margulis (wisely) declined my offer but did proof read the article. That Op Ed almost cost me my job and caused me significant grief but I'm still glad that I wrote it.
