News media accuracy

Larry J quoted the following:

>In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a
>story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if
>the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than
>the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.

Something that I've noticed is how frequently the news media makes "errors of fact", e.g. getting the diameter of a spacecraft wrong, confusing the price of one spacecraft for another, etc. I understand that journalists have deadlines to meet, are over worked and under paid, etc. Never-the-less it disturbs me that the facts are wrong even when the journalist is sympathetic to the topic. One wonders why we attach any credibility at all to reports from unsympathetic journalists pursuing political agendas. I wish there was some sort of impartial system where news media organizations could be rated for quality (like corporate bond ratings).
