And the projections and guesses for the future become completely inpredictable.
Vernor Vinge has written about this extensively.
The thinking is that sometime in the not too distant future a trans-human intelligence will develop.
In some circles, the result is believed to be the extinction of humanity as we now recognize it.
But the gadgets would be completely awesome. ;^)
