You seem to be getting my point.
I'm not talking about torture for just any crime, but for those rare instances where the evidence is more than overwhelming and time is of the essence to save a life. Getting a special warrant would be the proper way to go about it in order to stop abuses from occurring.
As for Mary Anne's argument that the prisoner would say anything to stop the torture doesn't apply in this case. If he told the cops the wrong location, more torture would be applied until he gave the right one, so it would be prudent to tell the truth in the first place.
