Your concerns about the possible negative consequences are valid. It is these very fears that have stymied any significant attempts to upset the status quo in the middle east. The area has been a cesspool of violence, tyranny, and abuse for decades as a result. The can do American attitude says do something. Give it your best shot. If you fail, get up learn from your mistakes and try again. This can be a bad attitude if things are not too bad and attempts to make them better can result in far worse. However, in the case of Iraq and the middle east things have been so bad for so long a higher level of risk taking is warranted.
