But at least now they have a fighting chance, which is really all we can give them. Left alone, they would certainly have continued under Saddam's tyranny, which under Saddam's Caligula-like sons, would only have gotten even worse.
Japan did not have a history of true democracy before they were conquered, and they did all right. The desire to be free is universal to humans, and it is unfair and untrue to say that some people just aren't "ready" for freedom. Similar excuses were made in the American South before the Civil War when there was discussion of freeing the slaves.
