Space/Science » in reply to Moon to Mars

My comments

Just a few ideas:

We can do this but it is critical we learn from past mistakes. Do not put foreign space agencies in the critical path (ISS). Likewise, don't put technological breakthroughs in the critical path (X-33). Let's do this with off-the-shelf technology as much as possible.

Even more important is public relations. This MUST be done in a cost effective way. That means no more business as usual with NASA and it's Big Aerospace buddies. Holding costs flat and reallocating resources within NASA's current budget is a must. The public is constantly being fed the strawman $1T figure in editorials and news articles. It is vital you hit the public over the head again and again and again with the true costs of the project. Figures, pie and bar charts, etc must be shown continually to the public demostrating the low costs of the space initiative vs other government spending priorities. There will always be the small-minded people jumping up and down waving their hands. If we can diminish their ranks by educating some of them it may be enough.

The astronauts who go to the moon and on to Mars must be scientists, engineers, construction workers and eventually business entrepreneurs. Don't just send a bunch of military guys this time. Let's find a way to make some money from what the Moon and Mars offer; even if it is not initially profitable it may offset some of the costs of the missions. Just one idea: What would the value of perfectly round Meridiani spherules be on earth? Think outside the box. Find ways to make it pay!
