Space/Science » in reply to Moon to Mars

Wonderful! Thanks Raoul

My input:

I'm thrilled with, and completely supportive of, the New Space Exploration Initiative.

While I hope to see Americans walking on the moon again soon, I also hope that our Lunar ambitions won't overshadow the even more remarkable accomplishment of putting people on Mars.

Much careful work has been done to demonstrate the need to keep our Mars program from becoming dependant upon our Lunar activities. As Dr Zubrin's inspiring books show, it makes sense to avoid construction of spacecraft in low-earth-orbit, or trying to manufacture propellants on the moon. Mars Direct--going essentially from the surface of the earth to the surface of Mars, and making good use of in situ resources at the destination--is a very compelling and rational solution.

While the moon is of undeniable interest and value, please don't let it de-rail our voyage to Mars, which is--relatively speaking--a resource-rich environment. Mars is a world in every sense of the word, and could eventually be a most credible second home to the human race.

Thank you.

Well, they asked for input! It's fair, isn't it? I want to see people on both the moon AND Mars, and I'd hate to see the latter become the "forgotten goal" of the space program.
