I've heard in letters to the paper and other sources from people in the Guard who say that it would be a frigging miracle if you could lay your hands on a complete set of thirty-year-old records for ANYONE in the Guard.

The blogs and others are trying to nail this from every direction they can, many of them mutually inconsistent. I'm just waiting for the dust to settle.
