The French.

Without the help of France, the "terrorists", the mangy farmer-types shooting at the uniformed Redcoats from ambush, could not have distanced themselves from Mother England.

The American Revolution would not have succeeded had not France, partly under the prodding of Benjamin Franklin, forced the British to occupied elsewhere at the same time.

And do we love 'em?

No.

Why?

Because they don't like unnecessary wars and the accompanying carnage.

Damnedest thing, isn't it? And after they were "there" for us in the beginning. Almost sounds ungrateful, doesn't it?
