I find the former archtype more comfortable as an image of an American leader than the other. Other people's mileage may vary.
Nobody was told to sing about Reagan in our public schools.
And it is kind of important whether this "worship" is applied to a deceased former president than one that is in power now and running for re-election. Think about it.
This statue was made after George Washington was dead. If he had still been president at the time, and he and his political allies had no problem with it, what would that signify?
Even now, it's creepy.
The sword symbolized Washington handing power back to the people who had wanted to make him King. A similar statue of a modern politician would probably be wearing a new crown, and gripping the sword with both hands.
