You missed my point...
I'm aware we don't need to launch from the moon. Can we get past that since it was never my point? I said we need the long term practice living off world before embarking on a 2-3 year journey far far from Earth. The return to the moon will certainly entail long term visits of at least 6 months but more likely year long tours before potential candiates for a Mars mission are determined.
