Personally I'm with you. I've reached the cantankerous phase in life, and I'm not inclined to take that crap lying down. "Bring it on!" works both ways.
But for the younger folk, there might be reason to worry. Remember that I wasn't so much worried about harrassment from official organs like the Ministry of Fatherland Security, but the more pernicious problem of private citizens doing their dirty work for them. By deliberately fostering a climate of intolerance and hostility to dissent in the name of perverted patriotism, Bush is encouraging people to put pressure on dissenters through covert discrimination in employment and housing, and other lesser levers. I recently heard from one of the young'uns worried about the possibility of future employment political litmus tests sabotaging his career. I can't in good conscience dismiss concerns like that.
November is going to be a major fork in the road. It's no wonder that the election's already heating up; our future is at stake.
