First, she wanted more to do with people. She got started in physics as part of a group, and got a lot of attention for being good, went farther with it than she was really interested.
Second, she regarded herself as a very good problem-solver, but couldn't make the leaps of intuition that some of the other people she knew could. She was intimidated by Bethe's ability to seemingly off-hand "do" math and physics either from memory or create as he went along.
She's now a Professor of Family Medicine. (She thought I drank too much. I didn't sober up long enough to try to figure out what she meant.)
About that same time another good friend of mine, who got his Ph. D. in Math from Berkeley at the same time Ted Kaczinski was getting his went into medicine, became a surgeon.
He said he could do the math, but was a plodder and followed easily tracked lines of thought. On the other hand, he said Kaczinski could do math intuitively, and how he got to where he was going wasn't usually obvious until he explained it. Didn't think he was good enough to do anything in the field.
Got a MA in Russian Language, and then became a surgeon.
