"amateur" astronomy
everyone knows how valuable these guys are to observational astronomy - apparently many people even get into some serious spectral analysis too. OTOH astrophysicists (valuable as they are) seem to spend their lives in front of a computer.
There is (or should be) always room in all disciplines for 'the accomplished amateur', which never means 'dilletante' or 'hobbyist'.
