Here is how it works:

The field commander accumulates a list of target coordinate sets from his subordinated. He transmits this to the B-52 where each coordinate set is programmed into one bomb. This can be done in flight. Then the B-52 (or B-1 or B-2) then releases all of the bombs at the same time over the target area. Each bomb flies independently to its pre-destined target, hitting within a meter of its assigned coordinates. The result is that the entire enemy formation is destroyed in a single pass. If smaller aircraft were to be used, when the first bombs hit, the rest of the enemy forces would become aware of the attack in time to move out of the way. When a heavy bomber comes along and drops one hundred 500 pound bombs at once, the enemy has no time to do anything. Result, precision destruction with minimal collateral damage.
