You can make fun of the terminology. It still means children are malnourished.

How many people today have the option of going out and shooting food? My family would, but we live in an area where there are still woods, and deer live there. If your average urban hungry person used a handgun to take a squirrel out of a tree, he'd be arrested. And unless his skills rivalled Annie Oakley's, rightly so.

We can also pick fruit and grow vegetables, because we have a yard. Try growing vegetables in a flower pot, if you want adventures in gardening. That's the option available to frugal apartment dwellers.

If you don't know whether you'll be eating tomorrow, but there's food on the table right now, you eat until you're stuffed, not until you aren't hungry. It's the same pattern we see in binge drinking, only it involves food. It's also the set-up for eating disorders.

If you're four years old and you've never had a piece of fresh fruit in all your life, what do you think your chances of recognizing a balanced diet would be?

If you're two years old and you've grown up (so far) in a home where people live on canned goods because they're cheap and they keep, how much of that infant-specialized enriched stuff do you think you got as a baby? If the choice was between diapers and baby vitamins, what do you think won?

If you're seven years old and you live in a home where sometimes there's food and sometimes there isn't, how well do you think you can concentrate on your reading lessons on days when you came to school on four glasses of water and two pieces of bread?

Care to speculate on the future of such children? It's your future too: when we are old, they will be our caretakers, sweeping our nursing homes, working in cafeterias, stealing our watches...

Real people. Make fun. If you've ever seen them, you didn't pay enough attention to recognize them.
