You are 100% correct when stating that our genome is a "stupendous kludge". I can point out volume after endless volume of various medical journels which will bring home in horrid detail just how right you are. In the coming decades, we will begin to come to a point where this train wreck of random happenstance can be put on a better organized and more secure footing.
As for your concern that we may unwittingly crash the program with our initial tinkerings, Mr. Stock has an interim solution. He suggests we put any modifications on an extra artificial chromosome. The expression of this chromosome could be controlled with the introduction of certain hormones. If something goes wrong, the offending genes could be switched off.
Like I said, it's a good read, and well worth the small price. The part about how the Amish were flocking to the door of a certain genetisist for his treatment of their children with Crigler-Najjar syndrome was a real eye-opener. If the Amish can be won over, surely it'll be an easy sell for the rest of the population.
