The irresponsible and ignorant use of science and technology is the single biggest threat facing the human race today.
Ain't it the truth.
When it comes to the dream/nightmare of genetic manipulation, I'm as concerned about the motives of the manipulators as I am about the results of the actual manipulation itself.
The Canadian province of Alberta started a eugenics program in the 1930s and they're still answering lawsuits for it today. For some 40 years, the govt of Alberta OK'd the forced sterilization of what it considered "inferior" humans. For the most part, that meant individuals who we today would call developmentally challenged. It was a stunning, almost inconceivable crime that quietly continued into the 1970s.
A study of the Alberta program helped embolden the Nazis to begin their own eugenics campaign. We all know where that went.
Taking great caution is the only course that makes sense here, and might be the only way to keep these developing skills from becoming an assault on certain parts of the population.
