...and should be a source of great shame to anyone professing to believe in the importance of the rule of law, human rights, or judeo-christian principles.
If the prisoners in this American gulag were declared "prisoners of war," they would be entitled to be accorded the Geneva Convention rights. To do this would bring up arguments of the definition of "War" and the applicability of such a designation to these men.
(IMO these detainees are NOT prisoners of war, but common criminals and should be held where they were captured and brought to trial in their local courts and punished according to the customary justice standards prevailing.)
These criminals have not been brought to America to face justice here, because to do so would mean giving them access to our courts and system of justice and according them the rights we claim to belong to any and all accused.
So, we sequester these men away, on a piece of rented land, out of the jurisdiction of any effective law. Wow, apparently we don't believe in our own system and are determined to show the world the US is made up of a bunch of hypocrites.
We have lost our claims to moral acendency at Gitmo!
