I think there are at least two good reasons to have it all out there.
First, I believe it's very, very important for the American people to see what happens when the country starts down slippery slopes such as the "Patriot Act" and refuting the Geneva Convention. We start out by thinking of what we're going to do to the other fellow, and do untold damage to ourselves.
Second, I don't trust Congress to follow through with any changes unless the American public holds their feet to the fire (figuratively). I believe we, the people, need to know the extent of this tragedy in order to be able to do that effectively.
For instance, until CBS came out with the pictures, the public did not know of 6 months of warnings by such as the Red Cross, Amnesty International, and other human rights organizations. It was only after the public became aware that the administration found the acts reprehensible.
This administration cannot be trusted, and this partial coverup, at least as much of a coverup as the administration can manage at this time, does not do a service to a people whose humanity has been questioned by the world.
Our only salvation is an informed public, the same public which the government is supposed to serve.

That's a good question, with, I think, a good answer.
