In fact, "schmuck" is the preferred spelling, with "shmuck" as a variant. Don't believe me? Check it out at the link above.

"schmuck" is the German and Nordic word for "jewelry" or "jewel".

A jewel is a decoration, which is useless. Hence, a schmuck is a useless person -- a fool.
