re: BTW

Oh man Tom, something we finally agreed on. I'm going in for a full checkup. In spite of my liberal leanings on things such as universal catastrophic health care and the environment, one area where I really diverge from the left is on government interference in the workplace. Obviously when the worker begins losing the unalienable rights of life and liberty that the constitution provides, it's time for the govt to step in and bust heads but I truly believe that free enterprise works best when it's allowed to work under as few regulations as possible.

When I've worked under unreasonable bosses in the past, I've simply moved onto a company that treated me right. Often those good companies didn't do so because some regulation forced them to but because they had an insightful ownership that realized that workers are more productive and loyal when treated well. I've always had this fantasy about going into business for myself but am very much deterred by the fact that the costs of employees has often exceeded the profit margins of small businesses. If my business had the potential of having a unionized workforce, it would definitely keep me from starting it.

Now of course had I been a worker in turn of the century America where worker abuse was rampant I'd probably have had a different attitude towards these politics. There definitely has to be limits to both sides of the issue and the laws and regulations have to fit the times.
