Here's a good column by economist Dr. Thomas Sowell. He says it better than I ever could.

I can vouch for his point about the people who were in the bottom 20% of earners in 1975 (the year I graduated high school) are not there any more. The minimum wage is normally defined for entry level workers with little in the way of skills or experience. Very few people stay there for long if they have any moxie at all.
