What's at stake is our national soul.
We use coercive methods to interrogate people who have not been tried and convicted of anything, people who are technically, and who may be actually, innocent. This is not the America I love.
The America I love stands for justice. This is not justice.
The America I love does not engage in such activities and justify them by saying that we are not as bad as Saddam Hussein. The point is not to measure ourselves by a negative comparison to evil deeds, but by measuring ourselves by our own ideals and adhering to them. Every day. Even with people different from ourselves. Even with people we don't like.
Continue to act the way we have, and we can rewrite the old saying from Walt Kelley's Pogo: "We have seen the Evil Empire, and it is us."
I am sick at heart from all of this.
