Yesterday, he admitted to doing things that I'd be put into jail for doing, and he admitted to doing it more than once. I don't know what was in those documents, but codeword classified documents are as sensitive as it gets. The indoc paperwork that I had to sign when getting inbriefed was pretty damned explicit about the criminal penalties for mishandling this stuff. There was nothing in that indoc paperwork allowing for forgiveness for "sloppiness". While to err is human when it comes to classified information, forgiveness is against government policy (unless you're high ranking enough). Berger had to sign the same documents and should be held to the same standards as everyone else.
The reports that he removed multiple drafts of a document supposedly critical of the Clinton administration give rise to questions about his intentions. That goes with the territory - his motives, credibility, integrity, and judgement are reasonable subjects for discussion without the "snakes" rhetoric.
As for the timing of the story, which would be more damaging to Kerry - having the story break a week before the DNC convention or the week before the election? After all, until yesterday, Berger was one of Kerry's more significant advisors. Who released it? I don't know, and neither do you. Quite frankly, I don't give a damn who released the story. It's completely unimportant. Based on what he said yesterday, his ass should've been hauled before a judge months ago.
