Plenty of societies have walked down this path of self-convinced unreality. It seesm that we were not even slightly immune to it ourselves. I fand that tragic and depressing. Worse still, I am simply terrified about where this path will end us. Pretending there is a passage through the rocks that only the emperor can see, that defies all known reality, is never a good way to sail the ship.
