Correction on unemployment rate....
I double checked the source, and I have 5.2 percent, not 5.6 percent, for the October 1996 rate, which is what would have been the latest (I assume) before the election. It was 5.4 percent in November.
However, the rate, at the time, was actually climbing from an August low of 5.1 percent, so unemployment was actually rising during the election season.
