re: Start with a good star atlas...

The view of Jupiter and its moons was what got me hooked.

Looks like I'm in luck, it came with a 2x Barlow lens as well. What is it for?

Stick your eyepiece in the Barlow and it will double the magnification.

by 6x30 view finder are you referring to the guide scope? If so, I'm not sure what power it is, because there isn't any writing on it. My friend hasn't dug up all the papers for the scope yet either. What do you use?

"Guide scope" usually refers to a small refractor in the 70mm range mounted on your OTA used to keep you on track during a long exposer- while your eyepiece holder is busy holding your camera. All I ever had was the 6X30 but wished for more. The LXD75 now comes with an 8X50.

Do you live far enough away from the lights to observe from home?

I live 30 miles north and am happy to report that the Milky Way is readily visible.

I think it would be cool to meet a fellow zoner sometime. I'm always up for the Museum of Flight. Let me know if you’re interested.
