Kerry's waffling is not going to unite people anymore than Clinton's did. The majority want a strong leader right now and Kerry isn't one. Bush is a strong leader with many flaws. The worst flaw of the Democrats is that they were so blinded by Bush hate that they listened to a voice of rage (Dean) more than a voice of reason (Lieberman) and elected a sorry compromise candidate (Kerry).
