Bush was a legacy at Yale but not at Harvard, yet he was admitted to Harvard Business School and graduated with an MBA. Not too many stupid people do get into Harvard, much less graduate.
Kerry's mind might be churning all right, but that may be more political calculation or
indecisiveness rather than any sign of intelligence. He has been caught so many times saying and doing absurd things that, well, I'm under whelmed and unconvienced that he's all that bright. For example, not too long ago, he announced that the US should reduce our military presence in Europe. A couple weeks later when the Bush administration announced exactly that, Kerry came out against it. He can't even keep his own positions right. Not exactly a brilliant performance in that one, and it's by no means the only example. Stupid is as stupid does, and Kerry does stupid rather well.
His campaign is in disarray and he never even has had an efficient Senate office, so what is there to indicate that he's up to the challenge of managing the Executive Branch? Nothing. He has refused to appear on camera taking questions from any serious journalist for over a month, and even with a friendly interview by Imus, he leaves no impression of what he believes. He may go down as the worst presidential candidate in modern memory.
