It's a conclusion intelligent people can draw based on the circumstances, the demonstrated effectiveness of current and previous laws, and many other factors, including basic common sense. It has been mentioned that the gun used would not only have been legal under the former Federal weapons ban, but it was legal under the existing assault weapons ban in Connecticut. If legislators want to keep trying to square the circle of making guns legal but not at all dangerous, go for it. If they want to go the way of Japan, they can try to go for that, too. But this country is not Japan.
As for "getting out of the way," we were "out of the way" for two years. Obama and the Democrats did nothing in this area to tighten gun laws. In fact, they were loosened.
