And we're talking past each other. Again.

I did suggest a solution. It's a multiple deployment of public policies intended to get to the root of violence. To wit: better education, higher rates of literacy, more and better mental health care as part of health care improvements in general, the destigmatization of mental illness, and taking a crack at economic inequality and employment issues. The employment part, I just added here. We all know almost nothing about Adam Lanza and what went on in his family, but I wonder, if he'd had a job and been at work, would he have taken time off to go shoot up a school?

Do you have any idea what it takes to get mental health care for someone? You can sit in the emergency room for almost a day just to see someone. Try that with a person who is physically able to leave and agitated enough to go. The only place that will almost always take a mentally ill person right away is a jail, and that's provided they've done something to get themselves arrested.

I've been hearing, over and over, that gun control is the solution. It's not. It's a band-aid. Creating a society in which we are less likely to kill each other is the solution. Elsewhere, I have said that, if there is support based on something more than horror, modifications to the current gun laws ought to be discussed. Do you want the cooperation of the people who currently own guns? Does it matter?

Prohibition never, never, ever works. We should know that by now.

If you want an instant solution, good luck.

The NRA's solution is a stupid one. It creates one more target, and the opportunity for a firefight. Of course you'd rather argue with that. Bulletproof glass and steel lock-down grills make more sense.
