Republicans used to be associated with the aggressive pursuit of racial equality -- in the 1870s. When the Democratic leadership finally saw the light in the 1960s, many segregation Democrats (not exclusively Southerners, btw -- segregation in the North was just as real, but didn't use photogenic signage to reinforce it) eventually wound up in the Republican party. The banner was states' rights, a well-worn if dimly remembered battle cry from the 1840s and 1850s. Everything old is new again.
It makes me wonder if the voter fraud people moved over with the segregationists. But I suspect there are enough sleezemeisters to go around.
It's too bad, too. We have people in public service in this country -- yes, I mean politicians -- who are really and truly in it to serve the public. We have people motivated by love of country and by love of their neighbors. But who do we spotlight? This bunch of losers. Pffft.
