Starter pistols...

... might work on the cougars/pumas/mountain lions/catamounts/Felis concolors, but don't count on anything like that working for bears. At our lake place both black and grizzly bears are regular visitors (not to our own property, as our dog keeps them well away), and neighbours have tried warning shots with shotguns, blasts from airhorns, etc, etc, and sometimes it works, but often the animals pay little attention or even come closer to see what all the fuss is about. Pepper spray works, but only if applied from within 6 feet and only while the bear is inhaling. And even then, as long as it isn't really POed. The lead-based spray is more effective, but a hunter from Denver last year hit a grizzly with several rounds from a .475 H&H (he was a good shot, too) and still it kept coming.

How do you tell black bear droppings from grizzly bear droppings? Black bear droppings are full of berries smell like s**t. Grizzly droppings are full off little silver bells and smell like pepper.
