Pardoned
It was a ways away. It dropped twice (from two shots) then disappeared. The guide and the hunter waited two hours then followed the blood trail, keeping well apart. They found the bear still alive, it charged, the hunter fell backwards and the bear grabbed him by the foot. He managed to hold the gun far enough back to get off another shot after which he felt the bear's jaws relax. (the guide, apparently not the greatest, had a jam with his rifle)
Maybe he wasn't Annie Oakley but he did hit the bear twice.
