We're in the free market here as Tom likes to say. These guys can kick or a hit a ball real well. They get paid for it because lots of people like to watch it, and they *do* do it real well.
Try kicking/hitting a ball yourself, and making it look good, and getting applauded for it. I know how badly I would do...
I love to see someone with skills I don't have. I regularly pay to see displays of sporting skills live, because I appreciate them [But not gridiron or baseball, folks - they suck!]. Not much of your personal "involuntary" (advertising sponsorship) money goes to sportsmen you don't appreciate - sports fans are happy to pay directly in pay-to-view and other subscription services. A fair bunch of sports fan's money actually goes to general programming, and some of *that* goes to science communication!
At least you *can* measure the performance of a sportsman in goals/runs/catches delivered vs dollars invested, unlike CEO's who are a peculiar race of cancerous parasites, IMHO. [Or scientists who often act as if they would like to be immune from market forces, and reality]
Like yourself, I *regret* that scientists who "score a touchdown" don't get an equivalent reward. I'm resigning from my University this coming semester because there is no support, but that's life. I have other skills I can trade, which will carry me to a comfortable retirement, and if it ever goes quiet, I have a whole bunch of fun stuff saved up to play with.
And if you REALLY want to open up the debate, how much do you object to these guys doing well at sports because they are black?
Embrace and honour people for what they can achieve, not what you think they should be limited to...
