Morally and Historically Wrong
We encouraged the revolts in 1991 and let them founder. One of the most shameful indidents in America's history of supporting Democracy. Al-Sadr would have probably never developed such a large following if not for the distrust that failure caused.
Beyond that issue is that we helped build Saddam's strength as a balance to Iran. We were partly responsible for the Iraqi's plight unlike Afghanistan where we had helped free them and they chose the Taliban to unite them. They were responsible for the assholes in charge there. Without Osama in Afghanistan I would have felt no need to intervene there.
