You might go back to 1956 when the Republican administration was preaching to Eastern Europe: "Throw off the yolk of godless communism," and the people of Hungary paid attention.

The Hungarians picked up their pitchforks and chased the "Godless" Soviets out of their country. There were celebrations all through the land.

The Hungarian people asked the United States to recognize the Hungarian right to soverign existence as a free country. Hungary was pleading for the recognition of the free world and wanted the US to acknowledge they had done what the US had been calling on them to accomplish. They had stood up to the Russians and taken back their own country.

At this point, Eisenhower left Washington, went down to Augusta and played golf for a week.

This gave the Russians time to amass their military and get enough tanks in place to re-take Hungary. The Hungarian people bravely tried to fight tanks with pitchforks. They lost.

By the time Eisenhower returned to Washington, the Russians had taken Hungary back into the Soviet "protection" sphere.
