The fattest and healthiest lions I've ever seen were in zoos. I'm happy as hell that the slaves in Cuba have a nice literacy rate. Too bad they don't get to pick what they want to read.
I'm seeing a lot of signs that political freedom has lost considerable value in some circles*. Heck, in the argument over Iraq, the removal of an oppressive tyranny is given no weight whatsoever in the discussions, compared to things like the reliability of the electricity or the safety of the streets.
If freedom isn't considered something important any more, fine. I could point out that a large number of nations around the world did much better under colonialism than when they became independent. Does that make colonialism a good thing?
Pol Pot was intelligent too, and picked up his brilliant communist ideas while at a university in Paris (studying electronics).
*It goes without saying that economic freedom was never valued at all.
