re: Owned cows, Raoul.

"And, another thing to remember. Cows kick forward, to protect their udders from strange calves. Horses kick backward, and we're used to thinking of that.

There is nothing to fear from being behind a cow, at least in the kick department, but be damned careful alongside one.

"

Not sure about this, Bowser... I once got launched clean in the air and thrown over a fence by a pissed off Charolais. I was pretty small, and it nearly crushed my lungs. Spent about 1 full minute not being able to suck air. I was pretty sure I was walking behind her when she kicked.

But yes, its true that cows can side kick.

As for them being dangerous, it depends on the cow/bull. There are some Bulls that will charge you on sight, and mean it. Then there are bulls that are very gentle. And I have known some pretty crazy cows too, that sometimes get a little insane.

999 times out of 1000, though, you see a bunch of cattle trotting after you its because they think you have some cattle cubes or a salt-lick, or some such. If they think you have food and are holding out on them, it can get a little absurd.
