Carry a stick.
It's ingrained in race memory with most animals that a man with a stick is either carrying a spear or a gun. It only works if there's a history of human contact, so domesticated animals are the best. Just swing the stick and they behave wonderfully.
If it fails, you'll be surprised how tall a fence you can vault with the aid of a stick!
