re: The average geologist ...

And how many alien water bearing planets has the average geologist examined up close? Five years ago they were pleading with the public to help them sort out the oddities in what they were observing with MOC, now they've suddenly got all the answers, no need to release any spectroscopy, they got it all wrapped up, do they? It's all just volcanic basalt? Sorry, I just don't buy your professional geologist line of shit.

Until the spectroscopy tells me that it's volcanic basalt, I'm going with the glaciation over volcanic rock scenario, heavy on the water. That general model of Mars definitely includes fossils, and so I'll continue to look for them, even if I'm wrong, and they never show up.

Once I've examined enough definitive evidence to definitely exclude biology, it's defintitely still on my table.
