I define "near" immortal as staying alive until the bean counters demand that the MERs be turned off. What a cool concept (fantasy really).... The two MERs keep trundeling along year after year beaming back interesting science. There's no way the bean counters will tolerate that...

While fantasizing I should mention that we really do need to send more MERs to Mars.
