Now see, black-and-white thinking will prevent anyone from understanding this situation. The B & W thinker has to believe that the the Soviet Union was complete, head-over-heels threat to the US, had declared total war, and anyone who suggested otherwise was saying that the Soviet Union was NO threat.
That's sad, because the answer is in between. The Hungary, Czechoslovakia, etc., were nations conquered much as Israel conquerd the West Bank. The Soviets wanted those countries as a buffer against another invasion from Europe.
And the Soviet treatment of those countries was positively gentle compared to the US and Iraq.
Certainly the Soviet Union was competing with the US for economic influence. But they were in no shape to go to war. They were shot-to-hell, and dependent upon the US for materiel. They could have started a war, and they would have lost.
When people outgrow the "either one extreme or the other extreme but there is no middle ground" thinking of childhood they can see the richness of existence. Until then there is little hope.

- Revisionism - it was OK to gas people, even supply WMDs, then it wasn't OK.
